OUR STORY

HANNAH AND AMELIA’S ANGELS FOUNDATION (HAAF) [/cz_title][cz_gap height=”40px” height_tablet=”80px” height_mobile=”30px”][cz_title css_animation=”fadeInUp” text_center=”true” id=”cz_88658″ sk_overall=”font-size:18px;” sk_overall_mobile=”font-size:16px;line-height:1.6;”]“From the very beginning having a family was something we both agreed upon.”

Right from the beginning, my husband and I wanted to start a family and were over the moon when we found out I was pregnant early in our marriage. Like any normal expecting parents, we went into planning mode for the arrival of our newborn, from essentials such as a nursery to our unborn child’s future. We never imagined in a million years that our pregnancy would be anything but normal.

On June 15, 2006, our daughter Hannah was born, arriving early at 28 weeks. Hannah had a brain bleed due to lack of oxygen, which took away any chance of survival and our eager anticipation of a healthy baby. Hannah was born still –[/cz_title][cz_gap height=”40px” height_tablet=”80px” height_mobile=”20px”][/vc_column][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-6″][cz_image css_position=”relative;display: table;margin:0 auto” smart_fs=”true” id=”cz_58669″ image=”2306″ sk_caption=”background-position:center center;background-size:cover;background-color:#5a585b;width:100%;padding:40px 50px 20px;margin-top:-20px;box-sizing:border-box;” sk_caption_tablet=”padding:20px 40px;” sk_css=”border-radius:0px;” sk_caption_mobile=”padding-top:40px;padding-bottom:10px;position:static;” sk_css_mobile=”margin-top:30px;”][/cz_image][/vc_column][vc_column][cz_title css_animation=”fadeInUp” text_center=”true” id=”cz_70914″ sk_overall=”font-size:18px;” sk_overall_mobile=”font-size:16px;line-height:1.6;”]Nothing will ever prepare any parents for an outcome as heartbreaking and life changing as the death of their child. In the delivery room, there were no loud cries of a baby, only the silent cries of my husband and the nurses as they watched me hold my precious daughter, Hannah.

Hello and goodbye in on breath. I had lost all faith in life and God after Hannah left us.

“I had lost all faith in life and God after Hannah…”

On May 3, 2008, Hannah’s sister, Amelia Sander was born early at 26 weeks. She joined her sister in Angel Heaven before she even came out. I knew she was gone and refused to push her out – but I knew I had to. My faith weakened even more so after losing our second daughter, Amelia.

After that day, I never looked at life the same. The same thought would cross my mind over and over- WHY? I was angry and questioned God’s motive – what was the God I once believed in trying to tell me. I knew Hannah and Amelia’s short time on earth had a purpose. I had to search for it. As a mother, it was also very important for me to keep Hannah and Amelia’s memories alive.

In February 2013, a visit to India would help shed come clarity to that one question constantly in my head. A visit to an all girl’s orphanage would give me that “AHA” moment people talk about. I knew I wanted to do something to help with the orphanage and at the same time honour my daughters.

“It was from that trip Hannah and Amelia’s Angels Foundation was founded.”

It was from that trip Hannah and Amelia’s Angels Foundation was founded. My hope is to inspire other women who share similar journeys to fulfil their purpose in life and to honour their children that have passed. I want to make my daughter’s proud. Their memory is alive in the faces of the children this foundation is helping. Keeping Hannah and Amelia’s memories alive through this foundation has given me the fulfillment and purpose that I felt empty for. I never dreamed my life would be what it is today. I never imagined a life without children.

Life handed me this pain, a pain that leaves an everlasting impression. I made the choice to embrace the pain and make a small difference by easing some of the heartache by helping underprivileged children. My life journey is full of love and purpose, which stems from not only helping underprivileged children reach some of their life goals but simply seeing them smile. I see my daughters smiling at me through their faces. I feel Hannah and Amelia’s love, support and strength, which is the driving force behind this foundation.

I feel honoured and blessed to be able to leave a legacy in honour of my daughters. I hope reading through my journey will inspire some of you to turn your heartbreaks into a heartwarming purpose-filled life. Holding on to faith in the face of tragedy and heartache is most difficult. There is a purpose in everyone’s life. There are signs all around you that lead you to paths that will help fulfil your purpose. You must believe and keep your faith even at the most trying times. I have always felt, if your life journey is more difficult, it is because you have a higher purpose. I believe this now more than ever.

OUR TRIPS

[/cz_title][cz_gap height=”40px” height_mobile=”30px”][cz_title css_animation=”fadeInUp” text_center=”true” id=”cz_91914″ sk_overall=”font-size:18px;” sk_overall_mobile=”font-size:16px;line-height:1.6;”]A trip to India in 2013 with family, Dina visited 2 all girls orphanages, sparked the idea of creating a non-profit  and at the same time, keeping Hannah and Amelia’s memories alive. Both orphanages were filled with young girls abandoned by their families, simply because they are female. Some of the girls were found abandoned in nearby ditches, trash cans and farm fields. The founders of both organizations made it their life mission to dedicate all of their time ensuring the young girls would have forever homes. This was the inspiration that Dina needed to know that she also could make a difference somewhere in the world.

Dina is continuously inspired by all the selflessness displayed by the staff at the orphanages who have dedicated their lives to helping so many young girls.[/cz_title][cz_gap height_mobile=”20px”][/vc_column][vc_column][cz_title css_animation=”fadeInUp” text_center=”true” id=”cz_78043″ sk_overall=”font-size:18px;” sk_overall_mobile=”font-size:16px;line-height:1.6;”]In 2016, for her 40th birthday, Dina ventured again, back to India, this time on a solo trip. Purpose of the trip was to volunteer with a local organization, Thriveseed which operates in an area known as the slums of West Delhi, Baljeet Nagar.

This trip was life changing. Comparable to the movie Slum Dog Millionaire, Dina was aghast with the amount of poverty in this community, yet she had never seen happier children. Families are living in makeshift shelters, using the outdoors as bathroom facilities, and sending their very young children into the workforce to help support every day living. Thriveseed is a small non profit organization, operated by a husband and wife. This couple moved from an affluent neighbourhood to be closer to the slums in order to help the local impoverished children and families. It was during this visit that Dina noticed the disparity between married women and widowed women. Widowed women are viewed as second class citizens, and are expected to use the open outdoors as bathroom facilities, with men looking on. Poverty did not leave anyone untouched in the small community.

Thriveseed works with the families to encourage them to send their children to a school operated by the organization. This small school provides free education to the children in preparation to enter a public school. The teachers hired by Thriveseed are former students that were impacted positively by the organization and have come to give back.

The very first promise Dina made to the women and Thriveseed was to fund a bathroom facility strictly to be used only for the widowed women. That project was completed within a month upon Dina’s return to Canada.

It was also from that visit that Dina decided that Baljeet Nagar be the location HAAF is contributing to. A partnership was formed with Thriveed and HAAF. To date, HAAF has purchased 2 rooms and converted them into small classrooms to ensure a stable learning environment for the children. In addition, to alleviate some of the burden off families, HAAF and Thriveseed operate a community kitchen in the same building to offer free food for students and their families.

With the India project up and running, Dina felt it was important to give back in her own community. Partnering with the Surrey School District gives HAAF and volunteers a chance to be directly involved with giving back.[/cz_title][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][cz_gap height=”150px” height_tablet=”100px” height_mobile=”50px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][cz_title text_center=”true” id=”cz_82820″ sk_overall_mobile=”margin-top:-30px;”]

OUR PROGRAMS

[/cz_title][cz_gap height=”40px” height_tablet=”80px” height_mobile=”30px”][cz_title css_animation=”fadeInUp” text_center=”true” id=”cz_61876″ sk_overall=”font-size:18px;” sk_overall_mobile=”font-size:16px;line-height:1.6;”]The HAAF Pack program has a direct impact on the local children in providing essential school supplies needed to start the school year. This program helps with giving students the confidence to attend school knowing that they have the right tools to get through their studies. The program also alleviates some financial burden from low income families, single parents, new immigrants and refugees. This program allows our team and volunteers to be directly involved by getting together, hosting a backpack drive, and assembling the backpacks. The HAAF team  delivers the backpacks to the school where they are distributed to students in need which are identified by the School District.

HAAF feels it is important to have our local youth involved with giving back to the community, as this makes them aware that a student next to them may be receiving a backpack from the HAAFPack program. This instills compassion  and kindness amongst peers.

The second program HAAF has partnered in, is the GIA (GXRLS) program. GIA is an after-school community action program for female students in Grades 5 to 9. This program provides a unique opportunity for students to participate in educational and stimulating activities aimed at developing them into strong, confident and  positive role models for their community. One of the current components of this program is environmental sustainability. The students are visiting local farms  to learn about the process involved in bringing the locally grown food from farm to table. HAAF is proud to be partnered in an opportunity in which environmental sustainability is at the forefront of the program. This program, again, helps students that would not be afforded the opportunity to attend such vital programs due to financial constraints.

HAAF also utilizes smaller funding to purchase shelter items and make meals for the vulnerable population residing on the streets of Downtown Eastside and Surrey.[/cz_title][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][cz_gap height=”150px” height_tablet=”100px” height_mobile=”50px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row disable_element=”yes”][vc_column][cz_title text_center=”true” id=”cz_80349″ sk_overall_mobile=”margin-top:-30px;”]

They were born 2 years apart

WHY: The Foundation was created from a place of grief in hopes to keep Hannah and Amelia’s memories alive by helping underprivileged children/families/vulnerable populations

WHAT: A Registered Charity that helps impoverished children overseas and in our local communities.

WHEN: Started as a non-profit organization in 2013, and then became a Registered Charity in 2017 ( since then, we can issue official tax receipts)

WHERE: Currently, HAAF is focused on 2 projects: 1) overseas, in Baljeet Nagar, West Delhi, in an area known as the slums, HAAF is currently providing free education to 70 impoverished children. HAAF purchased and converted 2 rooms in a building and converted them into classrooms.

In addition, in the same building, HAAF operates a community kitchen that provides meals for up to 200 people daily. By operating this community kitchen, it alleviates the burden from families of having  their young children enter into the workforce. Instead the children can focus on their studies.

The cost to run the program : $1000/month. This includes salaries of teachers ( previous students of the program, school supplies for the children, sanitary napkins for female students, food, propane and chef salaries for the community kitchen)

In our local community, HAAF is partnered with the Surrey School District in 2 of its programs.

  • HAAFPack Program, now entering our 3rd year with the program, HAAF has purchased backpacks and essential school supplies for close to 500 high school students. The students receiving the backpacks are identified by the school and outreach workers coming from backgrounds of low income families, single moms, refugees and new immigrants. This program helps students enter the school year at an even playing field amongst their peers.

The cost of the HAAFPack Program is: $10,000- this helps purchase backpacks and school supplies for approximately 250 high school students,

  • Our newest addition to the organization is the Girls in Action program (GXRLS)- Program is an after-school community action program for female students in Grades 5 to 9. This program provides a unique opportunity for students to participate in educational and stimulating activities aimed at developing them into strong, confident and  positive role models for their community.

The cost to run this program for one site is $10,000 per school year (SEPT-JUNE): this includes costs for up to 25 female identified students- field trips/transportation, snacks, and program leaders. To start, HAAF’s goal is to raise enough funds to sponsor one site in hopes to expand to include additional schools.

In the past:

  • HAAF has funded 2 playgrounds for 2 different all girls orphanages in Jalandher and Chandigarh, India- cost of each playground was $25,000 canadian dollars
  • Donated $10,000 to the Surrey School Districts (SSD) After-School Program
  • Donated $5000 SSD Backpack Program
  • made meals and collected shelter times for the vulnerable population residing on the streets of Surrey and DT Eastside
  • started india project in 2016 (purchased 2 rooms, desks etc to convert into classrooms)

HOW: HAAF counts on numerous donors, friends and family to help make a difference in the lives of so many children. Our Board and Team members are all volunteers and receive no salary- we all believe that by foregoing salaries more funds can be utilized for our charitable activities, making more of an impact on the lives of so many impoverished children/families.[/cz_title][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” parallax=”content-moving” parallax_image=”1219″ disable_element=”yes” css=”.vc_custom_1674583165907{background-image: url(https://rev.hannahandamelia.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/bg1.jpg?id=1661) !important;background-position: center;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_column][cz_gap height=”10px”][cz_gap height=”130px” height_tablet=”100px” height_mobile=”20px”][cz_gap height=”20px”][cz_title id=”cz_18215″]
